Troubleshooting external hard drives
If your external hard drive is misbehaving suddenly and you don’t know why, there are a few ideas for troubleshooting the problem yourself. One quick fix is to try the external drive on another computer. Also, try using a different data cable, as these sometimes go bad. You can also try removing the hard drive from its enclosure and connecting it directly to another machine with a SATA/IDE cable. One note here – some external hard drives have a built in interface card that attaches to the hard drive inside the enclosure. These cards encrypt/decrypt the data on the fly, so directly connecting one of these drives to another machine will only show encrypted data.
